Friends of Oakland Animal Services
Our mission is to provide homes, health, and happiness to Oakland’s animals in need. Since our founding in 2005, our primary focus has been to fund programs and activities at Oakland Animal Services that improve services to the people and animals of Oakland beyond the typical expectations of a municipal, open admission shelter.
Our story
Since 2005, we've been working seamlessly alongside Oakland Animal Services, Oakland’s only open admission shelter. Open admission means that every animal — homeless, orphaned, injured, unwanted, lost, abandoned and mistreated — is welcomed. Friends of Oakland Animal Services was founded by volunteers who understood that every animal deserves respect, compassion, and dignity.
Featured programs
FOAS-funded Shelter staff
We fund life-saving positions at the shelter that are critical to placing animals in loving homes and reducing euthanasia. These staff include foster coordinators for the dog, cat, and small animal programs.
Medical needs
We fund the medical needs of at risk animals entering Oakland Animal Services who might otherwise be euthanized. These include animals who may have terminal conditions but can still live a quality life in “fospice” (foster + hospice).
Funding for life-saving programs
We provide funding and assist the shelter with transfers of animals to rescue partners, fund tools to help with field services, as well as fund materials, training, and other supplies for the volunteer program.
