I’ve been part of FOAS for three months now, and in that short time, I’ve met so many wonderful people who are passionate about the work we’re doing. One person recently reached out from the other side of the country and shared his story, which is just too good not to share with you all.

Last year, Rich G, who once worked on tour and is still friends with the band, My Chemical Romance (MCR), created a small batch of custom MCR-themed Magic: The Gathering cards, meant to be a fun gift for the band to give to fans at their concert.
The cards became so popular online among fans that several people started requesting them. Rich didn’t feel right about profiting off this project, but he wanted to give the fans what they wanted. He decided to print another small batch, and he would donate the proceeds to a good cause. What he didn’t expect was that they would sell out within hours and raise over $10,000.
Then came the big question: Where should the money go?
Rich said the answer came to him as he looked at his dog, George.

George was adopted from OAS in 2014 after Rich saw his photo online and immediately knew they belonged together. They’ve been inseparable ever since. Recently, Rich also lost his beloved 18-year-old cat, Sundae. Grieving her loss, he wanted to honor both of them by helping other animals find the same love he found.
So he chose FOAS.

Rich’s gift– born from a niche creative project, a loyal fan community, and the unconditional love of one dog and one cat – will now help Oakland’s animals.
That’s the power of love. And it’s why your support matters so much.
Rich now owns and runs the Providence Vegan Deli in Rhode Island, where he continues living his mission of compassion by offering free meals to people in need. His generosity reminds us how deeply animals change our lives.
Thank you for being part of this lifesaving community. If you have a story about an animal who inspired you, I would love to hear it.
With appreciation for all you make possible,

Shannon McDonnell, Executive Director
