As adorable as they are, the odds are stacked against them at a critical time in their life, but FOAS-funded programs make raising the shelter’s baby animals possible.
The 7-week-old puppy below, along with his eight siblings, arrived at OAS earlier this year. They are among the thousands of baby animals whose lives have been changed because of FOAS supporters like you. This litter was placed in loving foster homes until they were ready for the next step in their journey.
Caring for baby animals requires intensive resources.
During peak baby season is when the shelter’s resources are most strained.
Each year, thousands of baby animals arrive at Oakland Animal Services, about 70% of cats who arrive are kittens, and almost 25% of dogs are puppies. While they show up throughout the year, springtime brings a surge. The foster program is one of the programs FOAS funds, and along with foster volunteers, is invaluable to the survival of these baby animals.
The foster program ensures that puppies, kittens, and rabbits have a safe space to grow until they are ready for the next step in their journey.
For orphaned babies who need round-the-clock care, or others who may be sick and fighting to survive, dedicated fosters open their homes so they won’t be alone.
Every single day is important for their development and survival. Caring for babies is resource-intensive, and with multiple litters arriving these peak months, the need often quickly exceeds capacity.
