Dear FOAS Community Member,
We are posting to inform you of some very disturbing news. In the past week, serious allegations have come to light concerning the treatment of animals at Miranda’s Rescue in Fortuna, CA, a place where FOAS has transferred many dogs for rescue. Here is a link to an article just published in the Humboldt County’s Times-Standard:
Together with our OAS partners, we are cooperating with the Humboldt County Sheriff Department’s investigation of charges. County Animal Control Officers are now monitoring the animals at Miranda’s, and we will go up there as soon as possible to confirm the status of animals we have sent there and bring them back to Oakland. Of course there will be no further transfers to Miranda’s. FOAS will continue to work with other rescue operations and will redouble our efforts to expand our network of reputable providers.
This is very painful news for our community. We depend on an animal care ecosystem that is trustworthy; we want everyone to care for the animals as much as we do, and we can’t abide their being mistreated. As OAS Director Joe DeVries said in his message to volunteers, “We are in this together, and I know we will collectively provide each other the support we need to get through this.”
We will keep you apprised of further developments. Thank you, as always, for your commitment to our community’s animals,
Avi Rose, FOAS Interim Executive Director, and
Trish Roque, FOAS Board President
