FOAS Community Update
Together with our partners at Oakland Animal Services (OAS) and with all of you, we are anxiously awaiting further news about the situation at Miranda’s Rescue. The Humboldt County Sheriff Department is gathering evidence and pursuing its investigation.
More than anything, we are focused on the Animal Control Officers completing their work of scanning all dogs currently at Miranda’s, while we provide whatever evidence they request to support their investigation. We have strongly urged them to complete the animal identification process as soon as possible. At that point, we’ll know which of our dogs are still there. We will also determine whether and how it will be legally possible for us to bring them back to Oakland.
As with all OAS transfer partners, Miranda’s Rescue was vetted by FOAS and OAS staff. We contacted Humboldt County Animal Control, as well as other animal care organizations around the state, and received positive feedback regarding the organization’s reputation and care of the animals. Additionally, staff, board members and volunteers who made transports to Miranda’s over the past several years observed their operations and shared positive feedback. We are now working with OAS to review vetting processes for the 36+ rescue operations the shelter works with, finding ways to refine and strengthen them going forward. This includes working with the California Animal Welfare Association and shelters across the state to gather industry best practices for rescue partner agreements and ongoing reporting practices, with support from the Oakland City Attorney’s Office.
We will soon finish and share an additional FAQ document and will continue to keep you apprised of further developments. Meanwhile, we thank you for your concern and support during this very difficult time.

Trish Roque, FOAS Board President
